Professional-looking creative has never been easier to produce. Templates, stock libraries, and AI tools put polished design in everyone’s hands. But when everyone looks professional, looking professional stops being an advantage.
In his latest Forbes article, Adam Taylor, Founder & CEO of Splendor, explores why established companies are increasingly blending in with much smaller competitors, and what that quietly costs them.
At Splendor, we believe a brand should reflect the business behind it. The years of expertise, investment, and reputation a company has built deserve marketing that communicates that stature clearly.
The Great Creative Leveling
Looking like a substantial company used to require substantial investment. Strong photography, skilled design, sophisticated websites, and distinctive branding all took time, talent, and budget.
Today, those barriers have largely disappeared. The same tools are available to every business, regardless of size. That includes the competitor a fraction of your size, and increasingly, everyone is starting to look the same.
AI Fatigue Is Real
Audiences are learning to recognize AI-generated creative. The familiar styles, predictable language, and overly polished imagery are becoming easy to spot.
The research backs this up. A global study from The Harris Poll, in partnership with the 4As and Infillion, found that 78% of consumers say AI makes advertising feel less authentic, and 63% say they are less likely to buy from a brand that leans on AI-generated advertising.
When the technology is more recognizable than the brand, the brand loses.
The Cost Does Not Show Up on an Invoice
The savings from skipping brand strategy or producing everything in-house are easy to measure. The costs are harder to see: weaker differentiation, reduced credibility, wasted ad spend, and lower perceived value.
Those costs surface eventually. Websites get rebuilt. Identities get redesigned. Campaigns get abandoned when they fail to perform.
Your Differentiation Was Earned
A $50 million company is not built by accident. It is built over years, sometimes generations, through better people, better systems, hard-won expertise, and a reputation earned one client at a time.
That differentiation represents a significant investment. Letting it disappear behind generic marketing to save a few thousand dollars is a risk few established businesses should take.
Build Around What Cannot Be Copied
As polished creative becomes abundant, the advantage shifts to what is difficult to replicate. A company’s point of view, expertise, culture, people, history, and approach to solving problems are assets no template or tool can reproduce.
Strong brands are built around those truths. Original photography, a recognizable voice, and messaging grounded in real experience help a business communicate who it actually is.
Use AI to Accelerate, Not to Define
AI is a valuable tool, and it can help teams move faster and explore ideas more efficiently. But it should not author a brand’s identity.
It has never been easier to make something look good. That is exactly why it matters more than ever to make sure it feels distinctly yours. Blending in is not a competitive strategy.
