How to Be a Better Web Design Client

When a business hires a web design firm to either revamp or create a website, there’s a strong chance it’s that business’ first time dealing with the web design industry. Web design clients can often end up digging themselves a hole due to a lack of familiarity with the process. Don’t worry though, we’re here to help. Below we have listed some quick and easy tips to becoming a better web design client.

Don’t ask a web design firm to create a carbon copy of another website

Asking a web design firm to create a carbon copy of a website is technically encouraging copyright infringement, even if the content and images are different. However, you could use the website that you like as a jumping point and tell the web designer what you like most about the site. A web design firm will be very grateful for the suggestion and it will help them know what type of website you are hoping to see.

Don’t disregard the contract

As we all know, the purpose of a contract is to set the parameters for a business transaction. Once you have a formal agreement in place, with set rates and timeframes, it’s extremely detrimental to the process to change things. If the client decides to add to the designer’s workload with new website functions or features at the last minute, that’s fine, but the client must be willing to pay more for requests outside the initial scope and contract.

Understand that web design takes time

To someone outside of the web design industry, tasks such as changing a font color or the color of an icon may seem very simple, but in reality they take time. When it comes to web design, there’s almost always more work than meets the eye. Making things look perfect online takes time, so even if you just want to change a few color schemes, it could result in some serious man hours.

Your role as a client plays a huge roll in the success of the operation. Think of it like this: just as a successful basketball team relies on its players to understand their roles, so does a web design firm. When you hire a web design firm, you become a part of a team and, concurrently, dictate the level of success your site will experience. The more you follow the tips and tricks listed above, the better your finished product will be.
