Why Can’t I Use That Font On My Website?

Creating an effective website has many moving parts, and therefore many considerations. A fundamental consideration to the user experience (UX) and the overall design is the choice of fonts that you use. Non-designers can easily get overwhelmed when it comes to choosing fonts for their website, which is one of many reasons many people turn to a skilled web design firm.

Of course, the finished design will be more effective when the website owner has an informed opinion when they are making decisions.

Understanding the basis of fonts and why you can use some and not others will serve you well even with a web designer’s support.

Then came the arrival of the open source JavaScript and Adobe Flash dynamic web fonts implementation protocol known as Scalable Inman Flash Replacement (SIFR). This enabled website designers to replace text elements with HTML text-to-flash replacements. SIFR enabled insertion of much richer typographic choices into Web pages without sacrificing accessibility, search engine friendliness, or markup semantics.

web-friendly fonts: free vs. paid fonts

Today’s web font services provide an expansive type library without having to spend money on a lot of individual fonts. This is made possible by adoption of the @font-face css rule which allows users to download a particular font to render a webpage if the user hasn’t got that font installed.

This essentially opened up an unlimited world of styles of typefaces where fonts are actually type.

choosing the right font

A wide variety of choice can be both a blessing and a curse without an understanding of UX design. Like the clothes that you choose, fonts say a great deal about your website. This means that they can complement or clash with your brand, other elements of the website, and most importantly, the purpose and appropriateness of the website itself. Fonts can provide the first impression of your website and must communicate the qualities that you want to project. Font choices often set the tone for the whole design and can influence viewers’ feelings toward and interactions with your design. These considerations are part of what makes choosing fonts such an important part of the design process; one that should be approached thoughtfully.
